Semaglutide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist) medication that mimics the body’s natural hormone to:
• Promote insulin release
• Lower blood glucose and A1C levels
• Suppress appetite and reduce cravings
• Slow digestion (gastric emptying), helping you feel fuller longer
• Increase metabolism
• Support weight loss
• Reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease
Originally developed for patients with Type 2 Diabetes, semaglutide showed significant weight loss benefits during clinical trials. In studies, over 50% of non-diabetic participants lost 20–30% of their body weight over 68 weeks with appropriate dosing.
Semaglutide is FDA-approved for weight loss and is the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic.
Tirzepatide is a dual-action medication that mimics both GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) hormones. It is the active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound and is FDA-approved for obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.
It has also been used off-label for:
• Prediabetes
• PCOS with insulin resistance
In studies, patients without diabetes lost:
• ~15% of their body weight on 5 mg
• ~19.5% on 10 mg over 72 weeks
What is Liraglutide?
Liraglutide (found in Victoza and Saxenda) is another GLP-1 receptor agonist. Unlike semaglutide or tirzepatide (weekly), liraglutide is injected daily. It also reduces appetite and cravings but may result in slower weight loss.
This may be used as an alternative if semaglutide or tirzepatide is unavailable.
